New bookmarking interface

In December 2025, a new bookmarking interface will be rolling out to our Reading Lists. Behind the scenes it works the same way as before, but the new design is cleaner and much more user-friendly.

If you’d like early access to create bookmarks using the new interface, please email reading-lists@deakin.edu.au

  1. Open the page with referencing information
This could be Library Search, a catalogue record, or the resource page on the publisher’s platform.

  2. Click the bookmarking extension
The new bookmarking interface will open and show a preview of how the resource will appear on your Reading List. This example is of an article bookmarked from Library Search:

  3. Check the preview
In most cases, the details will be correct. Click Save in My Bookmarks to add the item.

  4. Edit the resource if needed
If you need to add or change information (for example, a chapter portion or an additional web address), click Edit resource.
This will load the new item editing screen:
  5. Add extra fields
Click on the matching tile to the right of the item details to add additional fields. To see all of the fields available to add, click Show all fields.
If your work has a major and minor part (for example, a book and a chapter):
    • Add to 'part' resource – adds information to the minor part (e.g., chapter or article).

    • Add to 'is part of' resource – adds information to the larger work (e.g., book).

  6. Edit existing fields

Click inside a text box to update the information directly.

If an editor has been added into the author field incorrectly, click the three dots next to the field and select Convert to editor.

  7. Click Save in My Bookmarks

After clicking Save in My Bookmarks, the next screen confirms that the bookmark has been created.

From this screen, you can choose to:

    • Edit Bookmark – go to the edit screen to update or add information.

    • Return to Resource – go back to the page where you started the bookmarking process.

    • Add to list – on the right-hand side, select from the lists saved in your My Lists to add the bookmark directly to a list.

  8. Add to list

    • Locate the list you want to add the resource to and click Add to list.

    • On the Selected reading list screen choose from the following options:

      • The importance - select from the available importances to indicate your expectations of the student (eg. Prescribed Reading, Recommended Reading, etc.)

      • Position - choose where the resource should appear (this is combined with your where selection):

        • At the top

        • At the bottom

      • Where - select the placement of the resource (this is combined with your position selection):

        • Of the list - adds the resource to the overall list (eg. At the top or bottom of the list)

        • Of the section - adds the resource to a specific section (the sections of the list are then listed in this menu)

  9. Finish
Once you've made your selections, click Finish to save the resource to your reading list.
After this, you can choose to:
    • Go to the reading list – continue editing or reviewing your list.

    • Return to the resource – go back to the page where you started the bookmarking process.
