Elements is the system for registering and describing the research outputs of Deakin’s research staff.
Elements is designed to reduce the amount of time and effort researchers spend on managing their publications. It does this by harvesting published outputs from online data sources, including:
Outputs registered in Elements are displayed in the Deakin staff profile system, Find An Expert. They are also fed into Deakin Research Online (DRO), Deakin's research repository.
DRO describes and preserves all research outputs produced by our researchers, staff and higher degree research students. This includes published outputs, datasets, theses, and other non-traditional research outputs. All research outputs in DRO are discoverable by major search engines including Google Scholar, and harvested by websites including Trove and other scholarly databases. Whenever possible, DRO provides full and open access to these outputs.
Anything produced by Deakin staff and graduate researchers during their academic and teaching work is broadly considered to be a ‘research output’ and should be registered in Elements. This includes both traditional research outputs (TROs) and non-traditional research outputs (NTROs).
TROs include:
NTROs include:
Elements isn’t just for outputs created during your time at Deakin. You can also register publications from your previous institutions. They will then appear on your staff profile.
Deakin professional staff can also enter their publications and other outputs in Elements, though there is no requirement to do so.
Promoting research outputs through DRO and Find An Expert supports:
Increased impact and recognition of research
Promotion of researchers and their academic profiles
Transparency, thus supporting research integrity
Connecting and identifying researchers within the broader research community
Increased citation of work acknowledging researcher's contribution
Responsible communication of research results
Reuse by researchers in other fields for different purposes
As a Deakin researcher, you are responsible for regularly managing your publications in Elements.
