Researching Case Law

Westlaw UK

Westlaw UK provides access to databases of case law, legislation, news, journals, commentary, current awareness alerts and EU legal materials.

Searching Westlaw UK

While you can search for cases from the Westlaw UK home page, it is more efficient to select 'Cases'.

If you know the case name, citation or subject matter, you can search from the Cases Home screen (below).

Searching Westlaw UK by citation

Westlaw UK does not have the official series of The Law Reports for the Superior and Appellate Courts of England and Wales - for these you will need to use ICLR Online. Westlaw UK does include subject specific law reports of the UK & EU, Criminal Appeal Reports, English Reports, European Human Rights Reports, European Patent Office Reports, and The Weekly Law Reports.

If you know the case citation, enter it, or part of it, into the relevant field. You do not have to know the exact citation format in terms of brackets and spaces – Westlaw UK will recognise the text and match it to the nearest citation.

  • If you have done a keyword search, and have more than one result, you can select the ones you want to print, download or email.

From the full text of the case, you can access a pdf version - this is as it appears in the print law reports, and is 'court ready'
