Choosing a journal

This checklist will help you with the steps to choosing a journal and publishing with open access.

Checklist

Before submitting your article, ensure you have considered the following:

I understand Deakin’s Open Research Position Statement, Research Publication and Dissemination Procedure and Research Repository Procedure.

I’ve reviewed my funder’s open access policy and understand what is required for my research outputs.

I’ve used Where Should I Publish to identify top journals (including open access ones) in my field or asked my supervisor, peers, colleagues and librarians for advice and recommendations.

I’ve explored high quality fee-free open access publishing options like community-controlled (diamond) journals and am aware that if I choose a closed access journal, I can upload my accepted manuscript for open access in DRO after any applicable publisher embargo.

I’ve found an open access pathway that will make my work accessible to relevant community partners (e.g. First Nations communities, not-for-profit and community organisations, and/or practitioners).

If there’s an open access article processing charge (APC) for my chosen journal, I’ve checked to see if it is covered by Deakin Library’s Read & Publish agreements. I can check this by searching for the journal in Where Should I Publish or the CAUL Title List.
