GenAI basics

About this module

Welcome to our module on the basics of generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI). We briefly cover genAI history, what genAI is, and how it works. Particularly helpful for your study is the clear guidance on accepted and responsible genAI use at Deakin. There's also practical advice around tools and critical thinking.

The Big Question

This module is an introduction into genAI and using it throughout your studies. Ask yourself 'How am I able to use genAI in my studies?'

This is a complex question, because it can depend on what genAI tools you use and how you use them. Before you jump into the nitty gritty of genAI click on the arrows in the presentation to explore some real-world examples. We also suggest you reflect on how using genAI tools could enhance not weaken your learning.

Purpose of this module

Answering the question "How can I use genAI in my studies" relies on your understanding of a few key things. This module builds some baseline concepts of what genAI tools can do and a Deakin framing of genAI use in education. It also supports your application of critical thinking skills while using them.

Learning objectives:

  • Define genAI and provide examples of everyday use
  • Appraise genAI tools for the Deakin University context
  • Distinguish appropriate AI tools for study and learning
  • Apply strategies to use genAI responsibly

This module will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
