Install EndNote

EndNote can be accessed through EndNote Desktop software, EndNote Web or EndNote Basic. Additionally, users should be aware of software updates, training resources, and troubleshooting support, that relate to EndNote.

Visit the EndNote Online, Basic and Desktop comparison chart to compare the features of EndNote Basic, EndNote Web and EndNote Desktop.

EndNote Desktop software

Deakin provides free access to EndNote Desktop software and EndNote Web for Deakin staff and students. You can:

  • install EndNote on your personal computer from the Deakin Software Library. Further instructions are available for Windows users or Mac users.
  • download the EndNote app to your iPad from the App Store.
  • use EndNote on Deakin computers in  our Libraries and computer laboratories.

Note

Save your Endnote library to your computer’s local hard drive. Do not save it to a network or cloud location due to potential performance, syncing, and corruption issues.

EndNote Web (formerly EndNote Online)

EndNote Web, free for Deakin staff and students, allows switching between online, desktop, and iPad applications. It's available for three years from activation and offers limited backup for your desktop library.

Check the video Discover the New EndNote Web (3:08 mins) for instructional information on using EndNote Web.

EndNote Basic (free to anyone)

EndNote Basic is a free web-based application and provides limited EndNote functionality.

Alert

Deakin University Library supports creating an EndNote Web account and syncing with EndNote (desktop). It does not support other uses of EndNote Web or EndNote Basic.

EndNote software updates

EndNote periodically releases updates to improve software performance and introduce new features. We highly recommended you use the most recent version of the software.

Minor updates, such as from EndNote 21.4 to 21.5, can be installed by accepting the notification or manually checking under ‘Help’ -> ‘Check for Updates’.

Major updates (such as EndNote 20 to EndNote 21) will be managed by the University and can be installed from the Deakin Software Library when available. We recommend backing up your library before installing a major update.

Training and troubleshooting

Clarivate, the provider of EndNote, provides comprehensive video tutorials on various topics such as setting up a library, importing references, and using the Cite While You Write feature.

Check out this video (7:50) on how to use EndNote 21 for Windows users or Mac users.
