Referencing examples

On this page are some examples of key resource types that are often referenced in Communications and Creative Arts. These have all been formatted using APA 7.

Performance

Recorded performance

If you are referencing a recorded performance, refer to the Deakin Guide to Referencing APA7 style 'Web and video' tab, which provides the full details on how to format a video.

The formatting varies slightly depending on if you viewed the performance in a film, web video or streaming video database. Click on the plus (+) icons below to view examples that are specific to performing arts.

Film (e.g. DVD, cinema viewing)

Format

Director, Initials. (Director). (year). Title of film [Film]. Studio.

Animation

Frame in an animation

If you are referencing a frame in a video animation, refer to the Deakin Guide to Referencing APA7 style 'Web and video' tab, which provides the full details on how to format a video. The formatting varies slightly depending on if you viewed the animation frame in a film, TV episode, web video or streaming video database.

Instruction

The in-text citations for a frame in an animation need to include the time stamp formatted as follows:

  • Hours/minutes/seconds = H:MM:SS  (e.g. 1:22:37)
  • Minutes/seconds = MM:SS  (e.g. 17:21)
  • seconds = 0:SS  (e.g. 0:48)

Note: You do not need to include the timestamp in the reference list.

Character models

If you are referencing a character model refer to the Deakin Guide to Referencing APA7 style 'Other sources' tab, and follow the instructions for Figures and tables.

Example formatting of character model copied from another source is shown below. You also need to provide a corresponding reference for the source of the image (e.g. book, article, website, etc.) in your reference list.
