AI Evaluations - Library

Introduction and guide outline

“AI is not a done deal, We're building the road as we walk it, and we can collectively decide what direction we want to go in, together."

Dr. Sasha Luccioni, AI & Climate Lead at Hugging Face

About this guide

Deakin Library AI Evaluations offer structured, evidence-informed appraisals of AI considered through information science and library practice. Grounded in Deakin’s Generative AI Framework and Principles and guided by Deakin Library subject matter expertise, these evaluations help surface the opportunities, risks, and implications of AI use across higher education.

Each evaluation is designed to inform and not endorse.

Our goal is to support our community to exercise evaluative judgement and engage with AI in ethical, effective, and principled ways. We aim to contribute to sector-side conversations about responsible AI use and model how libraries can support critical engagement with emerging technologies. Explore our evaluation approach and process in more depth on this page.

Caution

This guide provides evaluative insights, not technical support. It does not offer troubleshooting advice or step-by-step instructions for using different AI functions, tools, or platforms.

Deakin AI support pathways

Select the pathway that best matches your AI question or context.

  • Stay in the loop (staff-only): Bookmark the AI Updates intranet space for internal news, resources, and events. Students won’t have access — see “Using AI in your studies” below.
  • AI literacies for everyone: Deakin Library is your first stop for building AI know-how. We run workshops, classes, and consults and provide curated resources for both students and staff. We cover discovery, digital capabilities, collections, and records management.
  • Using AI in your studies:
    • Study Support delivers appointments and embedded sessions on academic integrity, critical AI use and writing skills.
    • Library offers parallel help with the same activities but through a digital and AI-literacies lens.
  • AI and copyright: Unsure about licensing, fair dealing or training-data reuse? Contact the Library’s copyright specialists via the Library help page for tailored advice.
  • AI in research practices:
  • AI in teaching practices: Explore the Teaching and Learning Tools guide and connect with Digital Learning & Innovation for training and curriculum design support.
  • Approved AI tools and technologies: Check the Endorsed software, tools and apps list to see what’s cleared for use and under what conditions. Email genaisupport@deakin.edu.au for hands-on IT assistance.
