Systematic and systematic-like review toolkit

Toolkit of resources to support researchers in the development of systematic and systematic-like reviews

Systematic and systematic-like reviews

As researchers, higher degree by research and honours students you will need a basic understanding of how to conduct a systematic or systematic-like review.

This toolkit will help you to:

  • Identify the best type of review for your purpose
  • Understand the steps of the review process
  • Conduct a more rigorous and unbiased analysis of the literature.

Research purpose and other considerations

Different literature reviews serve different purposes, and have differing requirements.

You will need to consider:

  • the purpose of your review
  • your level of experience
  • the time you have available
  • if you have any funding
  • the number of reviewers on your team
  • your tolerance for missing any research (how comprehensive you need to be)

Review types

Further Reading

The following article proposes that due to the overlapping nature of review types, it would be more useful to develop terminology for the main dimensions of variation from both conceptual and practical perspectives.

This paper provides guidance on producing Evidence and Gap Maps (EGMs) for publication in Campbell Systematic Reviews.
