Book and book chapter metrics

What

Book and book chapter metrics are comprised of traditional citation metrics by other scholarly works, along with library holdings and book reviews to provide additional information.

Why

  • To provide an indication of the impact or reach of a scholarly book or book chapter

Applications

  • Academic promotions, grant applications, CV, library purchasing

Considerations

  • Traditional citation counting sources, such as Scopus and Web of Science, only index a small collection of book series and publishers. It can be very difficult to accurately count citations to a book or book chapter

How to: Find book and book chapter metrics

Scopus - Book/chapter citation count

  1. Access Scopus from the Library website

  2. Change the Search option to Documents, and type or copy/paste the title of the book/chapter between double quotation marks ("..."). Click Search

  3. View the number of citations for the document to the right of its record in the search results

  4. For more information, click the title of the document and navigate to the Metrics box in the right hand column

  5. Click View all Metrics to access further article level metrics such as Field Weighted Citation Impact, social media, news, blog, and Wikipedia mentions, and citation benchmarking.

Please note: citation counts from Scopus only take into consideration book series that are indexed in the Scopus database.

Google Scholar - Book/chapter citation count

  1. Go to Google Scholar 

  2. Type or copy/paste the title of the article, conference paper, or book/chapter between double quotation marks ("..."). Hit Enter or click the Search button

  3. View the number of citations for the document underneath its record in the search results. Web of Science Core Collection citations are also listed.

Book Citation Index - Book/chapter citation count

  1. Access Book Citation Index through the Deakin Library

  2. Type or copy and paste the title of the book into the search box, and click Search. To minimise irrelevent results, it may be useful to place the title between double quotation marks - eg. "Diabetes education"

  3. Times cited will appear to the right of each search result.

WorldCat - worldwide library book holdings

WorldCat lets you search the collections of thousands of libraries around the world through one central catalogue.

  1. Access WorldCat

  2. To search for a book, change the tab at the top of the search box to Books

  3. Type or copy and paste the title of the book into the search box, and click Search. To minimise irrelevent results, it may be useful to place the title between double quotation marks - eg. "Diabetes education"

  4. Click on the title of the book, and scroll down to Find a copy in the library to see library holdings.

Trove - Australian library book holdings

Trove lets you search the collections of Australian libraries, museums, archives, and repositories thorough one central catalogue.

  1. Access Trove

  2. Type or copy and paste the title of the book into the search box and click Search. To minimise irrelevent results, it may be useful to place the title between double quotation marks - eg. "Diabetes education"

  3. Click on the title of the book, and select the correct edition if necessary

  4. Scroll down to Get this edition, and select the Borrow tab to see library holdings.

Library Search - book reviews

To search for book reviews:

  1. Access Library Search from the Deakin Library

  2. Ensure the search box tab is set to Search (not catalogue) - this will allow searching of many library databases concurrently

  3. Type or copy and paste the title of the book into the search box and click Search. To minimise irrelevent results, it may be useful to place the title between double quotation marks - eg. "Diabetes education"

  4. In the left hand limiting panel, scroll down to Source types and select Reviews.
