Deakin provides access to image databases which are copyright cleared for educational purposes. Please ensure that you check the licensing conditions before re-use, and fully reference images. For further information on copyright, see the Deakin University Copyright Guidelines.

Please remember to fully reference any image you use in your assessments.

Some online images are available for use under a Creative Commons licence.  Creators can apply licences to their output allowing reuse of their work in line with the licence requirements.  The simplest licence is the Attribution [BY] licence - reuse the work, but acknowledge the original creator, and include a link to both the original work and the appropriate licence.

Here are some sources of images under Creative Commons licences:

Acknowledging images

In general, check permissions of use, and reference your images with:

  • creator (where possible)
  • title of the image
  • any image identification numbers
  • a full source citation (include page numbers for books, and check the image rights page at the back of the book.  Include URLs for online images)
  • access date

If you're sourcing images from the internet, make sure that you establish who owns the copyright – if in doubt, don’t use the image.
